What is alternative energy?

When talking about energy produced by fossil fuels (such as oil and coal), the definition of alternative energy will then be a form of energy that can be derived from other sources without the fuel’s negative consequences. There are several energy sources that are classified as alternative energy. Some of the popular examples are solar, wind, and geothermal energy. For fuels and transportation, several alternatives have also surfaced at present such as biomass fuels and hydrogen technology.

Why is alternative energy needed?

There are three reasons the use of alternative energy is being aggressively pursued at present. One is for environmental protection. Since fossil fuels emit carbon and other harmful gasses when burnt, these fuels contribute to problems such as global warming, climate change, and acid rain. he second reason is the growing concern about fossil fuel supplies. Since fossil fuel is not a renewable energy source, there will come a time when the sources will be depleted. Thus, there’s a need to find other sources of energy to supply the demands of the industry and society. The third reason is econo-political. Governments are supporting alternative energy programs to become self-sufficient and not dependent on fuel sources from other nations. This also frees a nation from the fluctuating prices of fossil fuels, such as oil. It is presumed that developing alternative energy will save a country more money in the long run, while effectively dealing with concerns about energy supply.
