Eco-friendly paint is water-based rather than oil-based paint and regulated by the U.S. EPA. Made with chemicals that have been deemed hazardous by the Environmental Protection Agency, non eco-friendly paint may be harmful when inhaled in areas that do not provide proper ventilation. Additionally, chemicals used in oil-based paints contain substances called volatile organic compounds that are incompatible with the environment because they are not considered bio-degradable.
The benefits of using eco-friendly paint, however, means humans cannot be harmed by inhalation of toxic fumes and the environment--such as plants and animals--cannot come in contact with chemicals that may harm them.
Milk paint, clay paint and lime wash are the three basic kinds of paint that are considered eco-friendly. Lime wash paint is made from lime stone and is used as a primer before actually painting a surface. Clay-based paint is a popular form of eco-friendly paint but does not offer the variety of colors that other paints do. Milk paint is actually paint created from a milk protein called casein and only comes in powdered form. It must be mixed well with water before using. All of these eco-friendly paints are primarily interior paints. When painting the exterior of a structure, however, you will have to use less eco-friendly paints because of breakdown caused by weather elements.
