Exploring Eco-Friendly Construction Methods

Today’s concerns for the environment are even affecting home owners. Older homes are often made with harmful materials that can cause health problems to its residents. For example, old carpet can hold mold, mildew, mites, ticks, fleas and other insects. Being exposed to these natural pollutants can cause asthma, depression, headaches, skin problems, and other health problems. Old paint has been known to contain lead, and old building materials can contain asbestos. Even more modern construction methods can contain harmful materials due to the chemicals involved in making and treating the product. This is why more and more homeowners are turning to eco-friendly construction methods.

Sounds great, but isn't this expensive?

There are several eco-friendly construction methods that are cosmetically pleasing, easy on the customer’s wallet and good for the environment. For example, concrete staining is becoming more and more popular as opposed to other flooring treatments. This is because concrete staining works with the concrete that most homes contain as floors. It does not require installation of tiles, carpeting or hardwood floors, which saves the homeowner a bundle. And concrete staining can last up to 30 years.

Environmentally friendly concrete staining

You may have heard that concrete staining uses a technique called “acid-staining” to stain the concrete. This acid-staining isn’t necessarily a harsh chemical. The traditional acid-staining products contain chemicals that react to concrete, which is what makes the staining possible. Some of these are water-bases, though, and last just as long as the traditional acid-staining product, and is less harmful to the environment.

Another eco-friendly construction method is using renovating products that are made from recycled materials. There are cabinets made of recycled wood and tiles made of recycled aluminum, ceramic and glass. For example, with flooring, if you don’t like the idea of concrete floors, you can have tiles put down that are made out of recycled materials. There are even tiles made of bamboo. These types of materials are environmentally friendly, safe for your home, and they support local companies who buy, sell, or use these products. If you decide to go with carpeting, you should choose carpet that is made from natural fibers, like 100% cotton.

What about the rest of your home? Anything from cabinets to appliances, and even furniture can be made from recyclable materials. If you’re having something renovated, tell your contractors that you are more comfortable with materials that have been made from recyclables than brand new materials. This is also applicable to the walls in your home. You can have the insulation and even the walls themselves replaced with something that is far more breathable and environmentally friendly.
