Going Green in Edmonton

With the growing concern in global warming and energy depletion, more and more government leaders and support groups are calling for increased and intensive research on green energy. What exactly is green energy and what benefits can we derive from it?

What is green energy?

The term “green energy” refers to energy sources derived from sunlight, water, wind, and underground heat. They are collectively called as such, because these sources do not produce as much carbon and pollution compared to those which involve processing of fossil fuels. Other terms associated with it are alternative energy, clean technologies, and renewable energy. Some examples of processes that generate heat and electric power using renewable sources are anaerobic digestion, biomass power, hydroelectric and tidal power, solar energy, and wind power. In some cases, waste incineration and nuclear power are categorized under “green energy,” but these are still regarded as questionable by environmental groups due to high carbon emission in the processes involved. In some countries, such as the United States, people are given the option to obtain electric power through green energy from their utility companies.

Why go green?

Sustainability

Since it comes from natural resources, there is very little chance of energy depletion. The sun, wind, and water source replenishes itself for generations to come.

Environment friendly

The processes involved generate little or no pollution. Since there are less carbon emissions, it helps address environmental concerns, such as toxic wastes, greenhouse effect, and global warming. The increased presence of carbon in the atmosphere is said to be the cause of erratic climate changes. Unlike energy sources that use fossil fuels, green energy reduces environmental risks associated with carbon emissions.
