Hydrogen As an Alternative Fuel Sourcehyd

Hydrogen is also an alternative source of fuel and energy. Here, the combustible nature of hydrogen is harnessed to produce power. To do this, the hydrogen must first be derived from water through electrolysis. Normally, it takes more power to do this than what one can get from the derived hydrogen. Nevertheless, it offers a great potential for harnessing as a clean energy source. To date, some companies have developed vehicles that run on hydrogen fuel. Examples are Honda and BMW, which has developed cars that run on hydrogen fuel cells. Their cars are either already available commercially or are set to be released soon.

How is fuel derived from hydrogen

Hydrogen fuel is derived from hydrogen through the use of environmentally-friendly technologies, such as solar power and wind power. With solar or wind power, chemical processes occur to get desired chemical reactions, such as deriving hydrogen from water.

Advantages of hydrogen as an alternative fuel

The best advantage of vehicles that run on hydrogen fuel is that these are probably the most environmentally-friendly cars in the market. These vehicles produce the least emission of all vehicles. When they burn hydrogen for energy, the only thing they emit is water vapor.

Another advantage with hydrogen fuel is that this can power a vehicle to run twice as far as gasoline can.

Disadvantages of hydrogen as an alternative fuel

One of the clear disadvantages of hydrogen as alternative fuel is the cost of producing this fuel. It takes a huge amount of energy to liquefy hydrogen. Likewise, hydrogen fuel should be compressed in order for it to be efficient for actual use. To date, it costs up to $3 to produce a gallon of hydrogen fuel.
