Solar Power Companies

Following the period of Industrial Revolution, people have relied on coal and eventually fossil fuels for heat and power. Beginning in the 1860s, the potentials of solar energy as an alternative source were considered due to fear that conventional power sources would soon run out. From the 1970’s to the early 1980’s, photovoltaic systems began to be commercialized. However, it was not until the late 1990’s that solar technologies became popular in the market due to environmental concerns and energy efficiency issues.

Companies that offer solar energy

In Canada, there are several solar power companies located in various regions. These companies consist of solar technology manufacturers and renewable energy utility companies. They are affiliated with the Canadian Association for Renewable Energies, Canadian Solar Industries Association (Ontario), and Canadian Green Fuels Association. As of 2007, approximately 544,000 square meters of solar collectors have been in operation, providing building and pool heating. The two main approaches of solar energy companies in Canada are solar thermal power generation and the use of solar photovoltaic systems in remote locations that are not connected to the electric grid.

Outlook for these companies

As Canada aims to be a global leader in the commercialization of solar power, the solar industry can expect to gain more stability over the years. The National Solar Test Facility in Mississauga, Ontario is equipped with a 200-kilowatt indoor solar simulator used to test and certify solar technologies. In addition, ongoing research and development efforts are geared towards making solar-powered air and water heating systems affordable for residential use.
