What is wind power?

Wind power is simply electricity derived from the wind. With the use of structures called wind turbines, which look like a modern and larger version of the windmill, wind energy is transformed into electric power. Wind power produced in a wind farm can supply electricity within its locale, as each turbine creates around 34.5 kV which is then amplified by a high voltage transmission system. However, for distribution to a larger number of consumers, wind power generated by wind farms should be transmitted to an electric power network.

What are the pros and cons of using and harnessing wind power?

The use of wind farms does not produce much pollution compared with traditional power sources. Shifting to wind power may help keep global warming at bay, especially since it reduces greenhouse gas emissions. However, there are several criticisms on wind power. One criticism is focused on aesthetics, which points to wind turbines as unsightly. A more major criticism is the perceived inefficiency of wind power. At a global scale, wind power accounts only for 1.5% of electricity used around the world. At the same time, the construction of turbines can be costly, especially since wind farms cover large areas of land.
